Visitation Rights

Guidelines for hospital visits

At San Ramon Regional Medical Center, we know it's important for patients to see their friends and family. Those visits are a key part of the healing process. Please read over our visitation guidelines prior to your visit and learn about our policies designed to care for the patient.

Visiting hours

Our patients get many benefits from the joy that family and friends bring. However, they do need time to rest. Please respect those needs. Following are normal visiting hours for each department as well as other specific guidelines.

Intensive Care Unit

Patients in the ICU are the most seriously ill patients in our hospital.

Visitors are not allowed during the nurses' change of shift from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

In addition:

  • Only members of the immediate family may visit, including: spouse, significant other, parents, siblings and agents with Durable Power of Attorney
  • Two people may visit at a time
  • Visitors must be age 12 and older
  • Cards, silk or artificial flowers, and Mylar balloons usually are permitted; live flowers and latex balloons are not allowed
  • Parents or guardians of pediatric patients are welcome to unlimited visits, and one of them is encouraged to stay overnight with their child

Definitive Observation Unit (DOU)

Patients in the DOU are seriously ill and are on cardiac monitoring.

Visiting hours are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and two people are allowed to visit at a time for 30 minutes. Overnight visitors are discouraged except in the case of pediatric patients and a parent is encouraged to stay with the child.

Medical/Surgical (Diablo)

Our patients in the Medical/Surgical Unit are recovering from surgery or illness.

Visiting hours are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and two people are allowed to visit at a time for 30 minutes. Overnight visitors are discouraged except in the case of pediatric patients and a parent is encouraged to stay with the child.

Family Birthing Center

We know having a baby is an exciting time, but please honor the needs for rest for newborns and the new parents.

Visiting hours are not restricted.

Only four visitors are allowed in the patient room at one time. Healthy siblings of the newborn are allowed to visit, but they should be supervised by an adult other than the patient at all times.

In addition:

  • Children under age 12 are not permitted to visit unless they are the newborn’s sibling
  • Only parents may visit the Neonatal Intensive Care Nursery
  • One adult may spend the night with the new mother; no children are allowed to spend the night
  • Please do not use cell phones in the hallways

Possible restrictions or limitations for visitors

Restrictions and/or limitations for visitors may be required when:

  • Visitation can interfere or hinder the care or treatment of a patient
  • There is a potential for exposing visitors to infectious or hazardous material that can put the patient or visitor at risk
  • Court orders restrict contact
  • Disruptive, threatening or violent behavior occurs
  • Rest and privacy is needed
  • Doctor or nurse needs individual time with the patient

San Ramon Regional provides a smoke-free environment inside and outside of the hospital buildings. Smoking is not permitted on our hospital campus.

Visitation Guidelines

For the best care of our patients, we ask the following of you:

  • Do not visit if you are sick, have a fever, cough, runny nose or if you have recently been exposed to a communicable illness
