The da Vinci™ Surgical System has been approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration for use for a variety of surgical procedures within multiple specialties.
Urology - da Vinci™ Prostatectomy
The da Vinci™ Surgical System enables a minimally invasive alternative to open surgery. Surgeons at San Ramon Regional Medical Center were the first in the Western States to perform this procedure with the da Vinci™ Surgical System. Our surgeons are hopeful this approach will help reduce the risk of impotence and minimize incontinence, two side effects that can be associated with prostatectomy.
General Surgery
Cleared for general laparoscopic procedures, the da Vinci™ Surgical System is designed to enable general surgeons to perform many abdominal laparoscopic procedures such as Nissen fundoplication for the treatment of chronic reflux disease or Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
To learn more about gastroesophageal reflux, visit our Health References section Encyclopedia and Library. Select the Health Resources tab at the top of the screen.
Thoracic Surgery
Cleared for non-cardiac surgical procedures in the chest, the da Vinci™ Surgical System is designed to enable surgeons to perform thoracic (chest) procedures such as esophagectomy.
Cardiac Surgery
Presently, the da Vinci™ Surgical System is in FDA Clinical trials in the United States for cardiac approval. The three current trials for cardiac applications include: mitral valve repair, atrial septal defect repair and totally endoscopic coronary artery bypass surgery. Our Bay Area Heart Institute cardiac-thoracic surgeons are training to utilize the da Vinci™ Surgical System if it is cleared by the FDA for cardiac procedures.
